Milky Way Workshop


Potential Location(s): Seacliff Beach, Davenport Beach/Shark Fin Cove, Pigeon Point Lighthouse, Bonny Doon/Wilder Ranch/Moon Rocks, or Highway 35 Skyline.   *(location to be determined, depending on weather conditions at time of workshop)

General Timeline: Start 3:00 p.m. Sunday in-studio, dinner break 5:00 p.m., head to location 7:00 p.m., sunset at 8:35 p.m., Milky Way begins 10:30 p.m., done by 11:30 p.m.

Milky Way Workshop Summary Points:

  • Timing & location (visibility and position in the night sky)
  • Long exposure camera settings (aperture, shutter speed & ISO)
  • Composition, angles and juxtaposition
  • Using filters
  • Creating Milky Way panoramas
  • Star trails & star stacking
  • Fun with light painting
  • Post-processing: color correction, correcting under & over-exposure, noise reduction, etc.
  • REQUIRED wide angle lens (minimum 35mm)

Prerequisite Knowledge:

  • Familiar with your camera, at least learning manual settings
  • Basic understanding of editing with Photoshop/Lightroom

Required Camera Gear:

  • Digital SLR camera & manual
  • Wide angle lens (35mm or wider)
  • Sturdy tripod with mounting plate
  • Computer & editing software at home (Photoshop/Lightroom)

Highly Recommended Gear:

  • Camera bag or backpack
  • Flashlight or headlamp with the red light setting
  • Cable shutter release [name-brand or generic] ($7- $80)

Additional Items To Bring:

  • Water
  • Food & snacks
  • Wide-brim hat & sunglasses
  • Warm, weather-proof layers
  • Sturdy footwear & warm socks
  • Rain jacket
  • Sunblock & insect repellant
